Gone Daddy Blues - live : Turk Murphy, Bob Helm, Ellis Horne, Wally Rose, DIck Lammi, Bob Short

A track from the amazing jazz collection of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation held and made available by Stanford University. The live recording is from a set, probably at the Italian Village, San Francisco in 1952. The band Comprises: Turk Murphy, Leader, trombone; Bob Helm and Ellis Horne, clarinet; probably Wally Rose, piano, Dick Lammi, banjo; Bob Short, tuba. The band personnel for this listing within the SFTJF appears to have been taken from the Jim Goggin book 'Turk Murphy Just For The Record' which incorrectly gives Darnell Howard as the clarinetist playing alongside the unmistakable Bob Helm. The pianist is also given as Don Ewell but is most likely to be Wally Rose who was with the band during this period. In addition the location is stated as The Beverly Cavern, Los Angeles but is most likely the Italian Village. I am grateful to Hal Smith for providing the correct information. This is a track that the Turk Murphy Jazz Band played many times and it's easy to see why; there are fourteen recordings listed in 'Just For The Record'. As always the video includes a slide recommending the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation Charles Huggins Project at Stanford University. I am sure that many viewers will have had a look at this amazing collection of music, photos, band books and ephemera relating to San Francisco Jazz. It is jazz treasure for sure. Thanks go to Jim Goggin who started the SFTJF in 1981 and everyone who helped along the way including SFTJF President, Bill Carter, and curators Hal Smith, Clint Baker, John Gill, who helped organise the collection and produce CDs for release. It was a generous gift from Charles Huggins of Sees Candies which allowed 2000 items from the large collection to be digitised. Enjoy. Peace to all. Ps Don't forget the other recommendations in the video for The Syncopated Times and Dave Radlauer's incredible Jazz Rhythm website. Best, CHJ.
