When a distraught and bewildered President Harry Truman announced in 1949 that the Soviets already had the atomic bomb in their possession, Americans panicked, and a witch hunt was unleashed to find the communists in their country who had given the secret to their rivals. Once the main whistleblower, Klaus Fuchs (the German physicist who was part of the most elite group of designers and developers of the bomb at the Alamo laboratory between 1943 and 1945 and who was holed up in his laboratory in England, where he was tried and sentenced to 14 years), was unmasked, the Americans, helpless to judge him themselves, began to search for those who could have been his accomplices within their borders, subjecting them to an exemplary punishment that American society demanded and that the guilty parties would never forget. They quickly found the perfect scapegoats: Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a middle-class, nondescript Jewish couple [whose only proven crime was being communists in their youth], who had no social critics and were tried—accused by David Greenglass, Ethel's brother—without solid evidence, in a rigged trial, without due process, subjected to public ridicule and slaughtered by the conservative press. After being sentenced to death in 1950, their case attracted worldwide sympathy, and even Pope Pius XII, Albert Einstein, and other world notables pleaded for clemency. However, after a long battle in court and several postponements of their executions, on June 19, 1953, they were executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing. With the Rosenbergs' deaths, the relentless anti-communist witch hunt—led by Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy throughout the 1950s—broke out of control, forcing many actors, writers, and artists to flee the United States to save their lives.
