Since time immemorial, strange marine creatures have coexisted with humanity, often claiming lives, sowing terror, or generating panic among sailors and coastal dwellers. Among these are mermaids and mermen, half-human, half-fish beings who, in all folklore, interact with people and, in many cases, have ended up romantically involved, as was the case with a Count of Galicia named Froilán—who, according to Galician tradition, married a mermaid and had several children with her. In fact, some families in that region display this history as part of their family tree. But the reality is less romantic, because in his book, *The Story of Whales and Seals*, Dr. R. Hamilton tells the story of a ship that sailed from the Shetland Islands in the early 20th century, and caught in its nets. The crew found a dead mermaid, measuring just over 1 meter, whose face and torso—including breasts—were human: “Her facial features, neck, and forehead—according to her description—were small and gave the creature an almost simian appearance, a far cry from the beautiful image we associate with a mermaid. Her very small arms were crossed over her chest, and her fingers, separated from each other, were unwebbed.” To this day, this remains the ultimate proof of the real existence of mermaids.
