The Sauape Tribe A small indigenous tribe residing along a tributary of the Black River, northeast of Manaus, the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon. A branch of the Sateré-Mawé people, the Sauape are known for their exceptional hunting and gathering skills. Their courage is widely recognized, especially for their coming-of-age ritual involving bullet ants. The Grueling 20 Trials to Become a Warrior "It is the path to adulthood. It is the pride of our tribe." If there is one tradition that best represents the Sauape tribe’s bravery, it is their coming-of-age ceremony. The bullet ant, known as the “killer ant” in the Amazon, has a venomous sting that inflicts excruciating pain. The Sauape use these ants in their initiation ritual, believing that developing resistance to their venom is essential for survival in the perilous Amazon jungle, where dangerous insects abound. To be recognized as a hunter capable of navigating the dense and hazardous rainforest, boys must endure this agonizing trial. What makes the ritual even more daunting is that they must undergo it not just once, but 20 times, starting from the age of 10. Anehu, a boy who has already completed 18 ceremonies, is about to face his 19th trial. Will he be able to endure the pain once more? Fearing the immense suffering ahead, he sets out to find the sacred spirit of the Amazon, the pink river dolphin, which is believed to grant wishes.
