Oradea is located in northwestern Romania. Situated on the border with Hungary, it is known primarily for its Baroque architecture. Numerous beautiful 18th-century buildings were constructed after the city became part of the Habsburg Empire. They were designed by the Viennese engineer Franz Anton Hillebrandt. The Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is worth a visit. A statue of King Laszlo the Saint stands in front of it. You can stroll along the pedestrianized Republic Street and visit the city's main square, Union Square, in the center of which stands a monument to Michael the Brave, ruler of Wallachia. Also located here are the Church of St. Ladislaus, dating from the first half of the 18th century, the pompous Black Eagle Palace, and an Orthodox church nicknamed "Lunar" due to its unique astronomical clock, which can tell not only the time but also the phases of the moon.
