The last Sunday of May is the Day of Romanians Abroad, established by Law no. 101/2015. A day dedicated to the millions of Romanians living outside the country's borders, as well as to the historical communities in the Balkans and Central Europe. However, the existence of a dedicated day and a legislative framework does not solve the problems of these communities. Beyond declarations, official messages and anniversary ceremonies, only one question remains: how much does the Romanian state do, in concrete terms, for Romanians abroad? On Sunday, May 31, at 5:00 p.m., TVR Cultural will broadcast a special edition of the show "Omul și timpul", dedicated to historical Romania beyond its borders. From Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Serbian Banat, the Timok Valley, Albania and North Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, the lands between the Bug and the Dnieper, and even as far as Vladivostok, Romanian communities survive, preserving their language, faith and identity under increasingly difficult conditions. Some lose schools, others lose churches, and many simply lose people. What does it mean today to be Romanian outside Romania? How long does the identity of a nation endure when the younger generations leave and institutional support is insufficient? How present is the Romanian state in the lives of these communities and how much do they represent a real priority, beyond festive discourses? The guest of journalist Rafael Udriște is Prof. Dr. Radu Baltasiu, director of the European Center for Studies in Ethnic Issues of the Romanian Academy, sociologist and one of the most important researchers of historical Romanian communities. We will talk about the Romanians around the borders of Romania, about Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians and Istro-Romanians, about the Romanians from the Timok Valley and the Serbian Banat, but also about a community almost unknown to the general public: the Vlachs from Moravia and southern Poland. We will not forget the Romanians deported to Siberia, who have already been settled in those lands for two generations. Our viewers will have the opportunity to hear ancient dialects of the Romanian language, living testimonies of a history that is still alive. An edition about what we have lost, about what can still be saved and about what will happen to these communities in another generation, if Romania continues to ignore them.
