The Compression Plank Exercise for the Hypermobile and Non-Hypermobile Populations
The plank is a core/abdominal strengthening exercise. However, it's ability to strengthen your abdominal muscles depends on the position of the ribcage, pelvis, and spine. If those structures are in a position that produces an overall effect of spinal extension, the plank will only strengthen your abdominals in a dysfunctional way. This will produce back pain and neck tension. Moreover, the simple fact that you are asymmetrical changes the exercise. You have more core muscle on your right side because you have a bigger right diaphragm. This asymmetry is defined by the Postural Restoration Institute as the left AIC/right BC pattern. The importance of form is secondary to the importance of the brain sensing the gravitational force of compression through your joints. Without compression, your hip flexors, back, and neck will tighten and your abdominal use will be inefficient. Interview with Molly Miller https://advance-physicaltherapy.com/p...
