In Yogācāra Buddhist philosophy, these are counted as twenty. "忿 (Fun)" — the flash of rage that flares up in an instant — is one of these Secondary Afflictions. Though both are "anger," if Episode 2 "瞋 (ANGER)" is the long anger held deep at the root, 忿 is said to be the anger that bursts in this very instant — like a kettle boiling over in a flash. The king who rules the underworld and judges the deeds of the dead from their time among the living. In his hands: the ledger that records every sin, and the "Jōhari Mirror (浄玻璃)" that reflects the good and evil of one's life. Known for his fearsome, wrathful visage — yet he is also said to be a manifestation of Jizō Bodhisattva (地蔵菩薩). The wrath with which he judges so sternly is no private grudge, but a fair judgment grounded in the Dharma. Behind that terrifying face, it is said, he hides a compassion that saves. 忿 (Fun) — a flash of anger — can wound others and scorch oneself when hurled about, but aimed rightly, it becomes the strength to protect the weak and set wrongs right.
