Rooted in the six root afflictions (Three Poisons, conceit, doubt, wrong view), they are the subtle disturbances of the mind that branch out like leaves. In Yogācāra Buddhist philosophy, these are counted as twenty. "悩 (Nō)" — the heart that keeps tormenting itself, dragging along past anger and regret — is one of these Secondary Afflictions. Replaying that one remark before bed and stewing over it also belongs to this same family of "anguish." Following Episode 7 "嫉 (JEALOUSY)," this is the ninth stop on the Secondary Afflictions journey. 💡 Who is Yakushi Nyorai (薬師如来)? Formally Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai (薬師瑠璃光如来). A Buddha of medicine who governs the Pure Lapis Lazuli Land of the East. His medicine jar in his left hand is said to hold medicine that heals every illness. Flanked by Nikkō Bosatsu and Gakkō Bosatsu, he is further guarded day and night by the Twelve Heavenly Generals (十二神将), twelve warrior gods aligned with the twelve hours of the Chinese zodiac. Incidentally, a Nyorai's true form traditionally has "rahotsu" (螺髪) — tight curled hair. This time, for a sonic diagnosis, he appears as an elderly monk-like figure, much like a neighborhood doctor. 悩 (Nō) — the heart that torments itself — can also be eased with the right treatment.
