Rooted in the six root afflictions (Three Poisons, conceit, doubt, wrong view), they are the subtle disturbances of the mind that branch out like leaves. In Yogācāra Buddhist philosophy, these are counted as twenty. "害 (Gai)" — the heart that wants to hurt and trouble others — is one of these Secondary Afflictions. A word snapped out in anger, or a heartless comment through a screen — both belong to this same family of "harm." Following Episode 7 "嫉 (JEALOUSY)," this is the seventh stop on the Secondary Afflictions journey. 💡 Who is Bishamonten (毘沙門天)? The representative warrior deity, guarding the north as one of the Four Heavenly Kings. As part of the Four, he's called "Tamonten" (多聞天) — the one who has heard the teachings of the Buddha most of all — and takes the name Bishamonten when enshrined alone. He's famously known for the warlord Uesugi Kenshin, who flew the character "毘" on his war banner, believing himself to be the deity's incarnation. Legend holds he appeared in the year, day, and hour of the tiger, giving him a deep bond with tigers as well. And now, the god who has "heard the most" — who has listened to more sound than anyone — takes his turn tonight to play the finest sound of all. 害 (Gai) — the heart that wants to hurt — once redirected, becomes the power to protect someone. "That strength — what's it for?" the general of the northern gate asks, guarding tonight's floor.
