“I didn’t get here by taking shortcuts, but through sustained effort over time.” With these words, Sandra Rocío Hernández assumed her responsibility as a magistrate of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). The statement was made during the presentation of the Peace Hospital as a reparations measure for victims of sexual violence within the context of the Colombian armed conflict. In her remarks, the new magistrate recalled her humble, rural roots, thanked her parents for their support, and highlighted the more than twenty years of study and professional experience that have led her to transitional justice. Sandra Rocío Hernández also addressed a special message to women victims of sexual violence, whose pain, she affirmed, has remained silenced for far too long. The magistrate asserted that their testimonies and their truth must occupy a central place in the work of the JEP. “I don’t promise perfection, I promise commitment,” she stated, announcing that she will study each case with legal rigor and apply the standards of international humanitarian law, human rights, the Constitution, and the law. Hernández asserted that being a magistrate of the JEP (Special Jurisdiction for Peace) is not a personal privilege, but rather a service to Colombia and a responsibility to the country’s recent history.
