Presidente de la JEP defiende el Acuerdo de Paz: “Ni un paso atrás”

The president of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), Alejandro Ramelli Arteaga, defended transitional justice, the Peace Agreement, and the central role of victims during the presentation of the Peace Hospital, a reparations measure aimed specifically at those who suffered sexual violence during the Colombian armed conflict. Before President Gustavo Petro, ministers, judges, victims' representatives, and project promoters, Ramelli responded to criticisms against the JEP. He explained that some criticisms may be legitimate, but others constitute a reaction to the truths that transitional justice has brought to light. "There are truths that some sectors would prefer to remain hidden forever in cemeteries, in the jungles of Colombia, and in the bodies of women," he stated. The president of the JEP acknowledged the courage of the women who broke their silence and told their stories, but noted that there are also men who have reported acts of sexual violence. He pointed out that this form of violence appears across the board in the eleven macro-cases being handled by the jurisdiction. Ramelli called for preserving the institutional framework created by the Peace Agreement and affirmed that projects like the Peace Hospital must continue regardless of political and governmental changes. “You are at the heart of this process,” he told the victims before concluding his remarks with a powerful message: never let your guard down and never take a step backward.
