Jan Gutenberg — Człowiek, który podarował światu książki | Film dokumentalny
Johannes Gutenberg—the biography of a man whose invention changed the world more than many wars. This documentary tells how the inventor of printing gave humanity books and lost everything. Why did his greatest triumph become his defeat? Johann Gutenberg is a man whose name everyone knows today, though his real life is full of mysteries and blanks. We don't know the exact date of his birth, nor has a reliable portrait of him survived, nor the location of his grave. Yet it was this humble craftsman from Mainz who invented printing with movable type and set off an avalanche that forever changed the course of human history—from the Reformation, through the Scientific Revolution, to the birth of modern nations. At the heart of this story lies the tragedy of the creator and financier. Johannes Gutenberg devoted nearly twenty years of his life and his entire fortune to a single idea, only to lose his workshop, type, and nearly finished edition by court order at the moment of triumph, just after completing his magnificent Bible. The man who created the most beautiful book of his century was stripped of it, and for centuries, attempts were made to erase his name from history in favor of those who took his work from him. In this documentary, we will trace his entire journey: the world of manuscripts and scriptoria, where a book cost as much as an estate; the mysterious experiments in Strasbourg and the trial of his deceased partner; the agreement with Jan Fust that decided everything; and the behind-the-scenes story of the creation of the famous Forty-Two-Line Bible. We will see how the destruction of Mainz on the night of the storm spread his invention across Europe, and how the very script he didn't sign ultimately returned his name to him. This is the story of a man who taught letters to fly and gave his previously locked-up knowledge to the world, only to die almost forgotten. His story is surprisingly relevant to our contemporary debates about freedom of information, its excess, and control—which is why it's worth learning about now.
