Andrew Carnegie — Bezwzględny król stali, który rozdał całą fortunę

Andrew Carnegie—the ruthless king of steel who gave everything, down to the last dollar. His first salary was $20 a week. The last check he received for his empire was for $225 million in gold bonds. Between these two figures lies one of the most extraordinary and controversial lives in the history of global capitalism. This feature-length documentary tells the entire story of Andrew Carnegie—from his humble weaver's home in Dunfermline, Scotland, through his emigration overseas, his work as a twelve-year-old boy in a cotton mill, his career as a telegraph operator and railway man, and finally, the building of a steel empire more powerful than entire nations. You will learn the behind-the-scenes story of the famous St. Louis Hotel Memorandum. Nicholas, in which the thirty-three-year-old millionaire pronounced his own sentence, the history of the Bessemer Revolution that made steel king of the age, and the dramatic events at Homestead in 1892—the darkest chapter of this biography, presented honestly, based on preserved documents and telegrams, taking into account the varying interpretations of historians. The film also reveals the great conflict with Henry Clay Frick, the behind-the-scenes story of the sale of the century—the transaction with John Pierpont Morgan that created the world's first billion-dollar corporation—and the last eighteen years of Carnegie's life, when he gave away some $350 million: over $2,500 libraries on four continents, thousands of church organs, universities, research institutes, the Heroes' Fund, and the Peace Palace in The Hague. A separate section is devoted to the fate of Polish and Eastern European immigrants who worked the hardest jobs in Carnegie's steel mills. This is a story about a question that history has yet to answer: whether the man who declared that whoever dies rich dies disgraced succeeded in carrying out his own sentence—and whether it is possible to distribute guilt along with the money. The film is educational and documentary in nature. All facts, dates, and quotes presented are based on historical sources, including Andrew Carnegie's autobiography, surviving correspondence, and biographical studies. We present controversial issues neutrally, acknowledging the existence of differing versions and interpretations. Scriptwriter and presenter: Stanisław Wiśniewiecki © All rights reserved.
