Pola Negri — Dziewczyna z Lipna, która podbiła Hollywood

Pola Negri—the first Polish woman to conquer Hollywood and the first European film star brought to America under contract. This feature-length documentary tells her entire extraordinary journey: from poverty in Lipno under the Russian partition, through scenes of occupied Warsaw and triumphs in Berlin alongside Ernst Lubitsch, to the heights of fame in Hollywood in the 1920s—and beyond, through the most controversial chapters of her biography, to the quiet years in San Antonio, Texas. The film includes, among other things: — Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec's childhood: her father's exile to Siberia, a Warsaw basement, and a miraculous acceptance into the Imperial Ballet School; — the birth of the Pola Negri pseudonym in a sanatorium in Zakopane and her meteoric rise on the stages and screens of wartime Warsaw; — the story of the film Madame DuBarry, which single-handedly broke the American embargo on German cinema and forced Hollywood to acquire both its director and star; — the backstage of the dream factory of the 1920s: the ten-thousand-dollar-a-week salary, the red nail polish craze that Pola introduced to the world, the war with Gloria Swanson, invented by the advertising department, and the high-profile engagement to Charlie Chaplin; — the affair with Rudolph Valentino and the famous fainting at his coffin, about which America has argued for almost a hundred years: despair or spectacle—the film honestly presents both sides of the argument and deals with the myths that have grown up around that August; — the marriage to Prince Mdivani, the loss of a child, the stock market crash of 1929, and the advent of sound cinema; — the most controversial chapter: working in Germany in the 1930s, the film Mazurka, the winning libel suit after a rumor about an alleged affair with Hitler, and the final break with the Third Reich after being asked to appear in an anti-Polish film; — escape from a burning Europe, quarantine on Ellis Island, years of poverty, and the famous refusal to play Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard; — thirty years of Texas silence: friendship with Margaret West, a second career, philanthropic work, and fidelity to the Catholic faith; — the last major performance with a cheetah on a steel chain, diaries with a confession about Valentino after forty-four years, and the memory of Pola Negri in today's Poland and the world. The film is educational and documentary in nature. It is based on documented biographical facts, memoirs, press reports from the era, and the findings of biographers. Controversial moments in her biography—including discrepancies regarding her date of birth, the circumstances of her mourning for Valentino, and the German period—are presented neutrally, highlighting existing versions and interpretations, without passing one-sided judgments. Where the only source is the actress's embellished diaries from 1970, this is clearly indicated in the narrative.
