BEHIND THE SCENES... Today I’m in New York - the city where I first discovered yoga! This week’s new, free class is a super crazy flow (finally a new 60-min video YEAY!), but looking back I’m wondering why I made it SO crazy. By ā€œcrazy" I mean long, complex sequences on each side and lots of changing direction to the front and back of the mat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super proud of this class. Do it if you’re intermediate or advanced - it’s fun, flowing and grounding. Filming, and teaching it felt amazing and I LOVE it. That being said, I keep noticing this pressure I constantly put on myself to make things new and different. To constantly be innovating and surprising people with new tricks. My theory is: WE ALL DO THIS. We put so much pressure on ourselves that’s really. not. necessary. Flash back to me in New York where I just took class with my favorite teacher of all time (I’d link to him but he has no website or internet presence of any kind, and he definitely doesn’t use Instagram). His class was SO simple. Yes, there were some creative touches and he has a signature style, but it was his ENERGY, his presence, that carried the class. No music. No fast sequencing. We did a warm up, warrior 1 and 2 on each side, some balancing, forward folds, a twist and that’s it. Stripping away the frills of music and fast footwork, I was able to slow down and drop into a deep state of exhaustion I didn’t even know was part of my busy New York ā€œvacation.ā€ It was such a great reminder that the teacher I love is so powerful because he EMBODIES what he's teaching, NOT because he’s constantly pulling out new tricks. In fact, I realized his class is so rewarding because it’s alway the same. We all have lies we tell ourselves to stay in a state of alertness or stress. For me, it’s that I have to constantly be ā€œinnovating" and teaching something ā€œnew" in order to be respected. For you, it may be that you’ll only do well at work if you put in super late hours. Or that taking care of your body means you always have to sweat and be sore. I’m trying to notice more and more when that sly, self-sabotage voice is stressing me out unnecessarily. Then I prove the voice wrong so I can trust myself more. For example, showing up to teach a class without a fancy ā€œplanā€ and then magically teaching something better than I ever could have planned because I was significantly more present with everyone and less in my own head. I’m not a huge fan of mantras, but you can use them to quell the voice that’s creating unnecessary stress for you. What I’m using: "Teaching is easy and comes naturally to me." "Eating healthy is easy and comes naturally to me." "Success is easy and comes naturally to me." Insert scenario of your choice and try to believe that life is supposed to easy. REMINDER!
