Incorporating Gender and Sexual Identity in Peer Recovery Support Services

This Peer Recovery Support Services Community of Practice session focuses on how peer recovery support workers and recovery organizations can better understand and support LGBTQ+ people in recovery. This session reviews key terms related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, assigned sex at birth, transgender identity, non-binary identity, pronouns, chosen names, deadnaming, gender dysphoria, microaggressions, and the importance of creating safe, affirming spaces. Presenters and participants also discuss how trauma, stigma, substance use, recovery, and identity can intersect for LGBTQ+ people. The recording includes discussion about practical ways peer recovery workers can reduce harm, avoid assumptions, honor names and pronouns, respond to mistakes, support people’s self-identification, and create more welcoming recovery spaces for people across gender and sexual identities. This recording may be useful for peer recovery support workers, supervisors, volunteers, recovery community organizations, and behavioral health partners interested in strengthening inclusive and affirming peer recovery support.
