Taking Stock: Planning for Continued Recovery | June 11, 2020
Taking Stock: Planning for Continued Recovery Presented by the PRSS Community of Practice Recorded on: June 11, 2020 This Community of Practice session explores how providers can support continued recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on adapting treatment, recovery supports, and case planning during a period of isolation, service disruption, and increased stress. Participants will learn how to: • Identify recovery planning challenges that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic • Discuss strategies for supporting clients through telehealth and remote care • Explore approaches for strengthening accountability, connection, and peer support • Recognize barriers related to transportation, housing, relationship stress, domestic violence, and technology access • Apply case consultation strategies to support individuals receiving medication assisted treatment and related recovery services The session features case-based discussion among providers, with examples involving clients navigating medication assisted treatment, co-occurring mental health concerns, relationship loss, domestic violence histories, stimulant use, opioid use disorder, relapse/recurrence risk, homelessness, transportation barriers, and disrupted court or child welfare processes. Discussion topics include how to help clients move from external accountability, such as toxicology screening, toward internal accountability and recovery ownership; how to use motivational interviewing and counseling to support recovery goals; how to connect clients with peer recovery supports during remote service delivery; and how to identify safe, creative alternatives when in-person supports are limited. The session also addresses the increased complexity of recovery work during the pandemic, including isolation, grief, loss of employment, reduced access to in-person groups, difficulty maintaining engagement, and the need for flexible, trauma-informed, and person-centered care. Participants share resources related to online support groups, recovery community organizations, oral swab testing, naloxone access, stimulant use disorder, contingency management, residential treatment, sober housing, and local recovery supports. Featured Discussion Topics: Medication Assisted Treatment and Telehealth Providers discuss how clients receiving medication assisted treatment were affected by the shift to telehealth, including changes in toxicology screening, challenges with accountability, and strategies for maintaining therapeutic connection. Recovery Supports During COVID-19 The session highlights the role of recovery community organizations, recovery coaching, online meetings, virtual groups, outdoor recovery meetings, and peer-based supports in helping individuals stay connected during the pandemic. Stimulant Use and Complex Recovery Needs Participants discuss the challenges of supporting clients using stimulants, especially when clients also face housing instability, transportation barriers, relationship stress, child welfare involvement, and limited access to higher levels of care.
