Emerging Drug Trends for SUD Treatment Providers

This Substance Use Disorder Treatment Community of Practice session focuses on emerging drug trends affecting treatment providers and the people they serve. This session reviews current issues related to cannabis, stimulants, synthetic cannabinoids, and kratom, including changes in potency, patterns of use, co-occurring substance use, overdose risk, psychosis, treatment engagement, and challenges related to limited evidence-based treatment options for some substances. Discussion also includes practical treatment considerations, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, contingency management, the Matrix Model, urine drug testing, assessment, public education, and the importance of learning from providers’ real-world experience when research is limited. This recording may be useful for SUD treatment providers, behavioral health teams, recovery support professionals, and community partners interested in understanding and responding to changing substance use patterns in New Hampshire.
