First, we need to separate two important concepts: Profit distribution is one thing. Pro labore is another. What is profit distribution? You have your financial control, your income statement, you have clarity on all your numbers, and you know that the bottom line is your profit and loss statement. You have revenue, your costs, expenses, your non-operational transactions, and on the bottom line you have the result. This result is usually the profit or loss of your company. That's the result. If you take this money, which theoretically is the profit of your company, and put it in your pocket, you are making a distribution, the proportion, how much you should withdraw, put in your pocket from these profits, we will talk about that in a moment. What is pro-labore? It is nothing more than the salary of the entrepreneur, the partner who is in the operation of the company. You perform a function within the company that should normally be strategic and in many cases ends up being operational, but you have a role within the company. Your pro-labore is like your salary. The company has to pay you a salary because, after all, you are working, you are making things happen on a daily basis. And it is at this moment that many entrepreneurs end up making the wrong decision of not defining a salary, that is, each month they take a different amount, and that is the mistake of the entrepreneur who does not assign themselves a fixed monthly amount regarding the remuneration of their work. Understand that as part of the operational structure you are a cost to the company and if later on, when you need to leave the operation, sell your business, or make any structural adjustment, this resource will need to be considered, after all, you have a business, it's not for you to work in it forever every day. The vast majority of entrepreneurs would like to grow, make their company more independent, and make the company not need their presence all the time. How do I calculate my pro-labore? It's not how much you need in your day-to-day life to live, but rather how much a market professional who was hired by you should receive, or deserves, or the market pays to perform the same function that you perform. You need to look at the market to define your salary. Example: you would define that the ideal pro-labore for this moment would be R$ 10,000.00, then you would receive your respective salary, just like your employees. In your case, R$ 10,000.00. Correct distribution of profits: It will depend on the moment of your company, the cash you have and the operational cost of your company. A recommendation that I usually make to my students and clients is the following: If your company does not yet have cash and especially a reserve fund, my suggestion is that you distribute the minimum possible profits because perhaps your company is in a moment of ensuring its survival. It is very common for companies to go through variations. What is the function of a reserve fund? When your company is going through a more turbulent time, it is important that you have cash, a reserve fund that will precisely protect your company. I usually suggest a reserve fund that is equivalent to at least 6 months of your fixed operating expenses. You know that fixed expense that you have to pay every month? Rent, payroll, energy, in short, a series of fixed expenses. Ex.: Let's say you spend R$ 30,000.00/month on your company. The recommendation is that you accumulate R$ 180,000.00 in cash. And then, once you have built up this cash reserve, that's when you can start distributing a little more profit because theoretically your company is protected. Another suggestion: In addition to having your reserve fund, you can also return your company's investments/profits as investment, either by taking a specific action or by creating another cash reserve in addition to the reserve fund so that later on you can invest in a project, a second unit, or a specific technology for your segment. It's important to separate them into categories: reserve fund, opportunity fund, partners' fund. This is an idea so that you can make a more balanced distribution.
