Many entrepreneurs ask themselves: how much is my company worth, how do I value my business? It's a complex question, there's no simple answer, but I'll try to guide you and explain the paths you can take to identify and make an accurate calculation of your business's value. There are 3 most common ways to calculate the value of a company: 1) EBITDA MULTIPLE – this relates to the operational profitability of your business, what is the operational capacity of your company to generate cash. A multiple of this result is used to calculate the value of the company. What is EBITDA? It comes from English, translated into Portuguese: RESULTS GENERATED BEFORE DEPRECIATION, TAXES AND AMORTIZATION. What does it mean in practice? What operational result is your company generating? It's when you take your operating revenues, that is, everything you sold in services/products, and you subtract your operating costs, costs and expenses of everything you spent. When you calculate EBITDA, you don't include tax, depreciation, amortization, so this gives you a parameter from the point of view of cash generation, showing how your company generates results. What is your company's operational capacity to generate results? This is a very important indicator, which is what we call OPERATIONAL PROFITABILITY, because it actually helps to understand whether your company is profitable or not. It is very common for some companies to have a very good operation that generates results, but due to a series of decisions that were made throughout the company's trajectory, sometimes the cash flow, that is, the amount that the company spends on bank loans, for example, that it has to pay every month or tax repayment, these expenses are greater than the operational profitability. Sometimes entrepreneurs think that the company is not profitable, and in fact it is. Operationally, the company may be profitable, but these financial costs that come after the operation make the business unviable. What is the multiple? By what do I have to multiply this result? Let's say your company generated R$500,000.00 in profit in one year. If we multiply this factor by 5, then your company is worth R$2.5 million. But would 5 times be a good multiple? Actually, there's no single answer because it varies greatly. It depends on your segment, the company's age, the market it operates in, and the inherent risk of that market. 2) DISCOUNTED CASH FLOW – when you make a financial projection and bring that value to present value. You will make a projection for several years into the future. You are in your present year, and you will project the results for the future using some assumptions, for example, the assumption of growth, contribution margin, and profitability. You project this for the next 5 years, for example, and there is another factor that is a very specific indicator, which is the perpetuity factor. Through a calculation, you bring this to a present value. 3) REVENUE MULTIPLE – thinking about small and medium-sized businesses, this methodology is usually the most common. You will take how much your company earns in a year and apply a multiplication factor, say 2 or 3 times your revenue. So, if your company earns, for example, R$ 1 million per year, you take that annual revenue, times 2, times 3, and that gives you R$ 2.3 million. So, my company today is worth R$ 3 million because it has an annual revenue of R$ 1 million. What is this factor? 2, 3, 5, 10? This is a very qualitative and very subjective analysis. It will depend a lot on your business stage, the segment, etc. You can use these methods to get an idea of how much your business is worth, but if you really want to take the step of seeking an investor or perhaps buying or selling a company, I suggest you seek expert advice so that you can have a much clearer view of your business model.
