Corps à corps avec El Capitan, avec Soline Kentzel #101

🎧 Join Soline Kentzel for a solo ascent of The Nose in Yosemite. Find her story in episode 101 of Les Baladeurs, “Hand-to-Hand Combat with El Capitan.” While the history of climbing is full of significant dates, September 19, 1993, is undoubtedly one of those that revolutionized the sport. On that day, in the heart of Yosemite National Park, climber Lynn Hill achieved what everyone thought impossible: the first free ascent of The Nose, a legendary route on El Capitan, a massive 900-meter-high wall that towers over the valley. Standing at just 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 meters), Lynn Hill took the opportunity to outmaneuver the local powerhouses, who had been failing for years, rewarding them with a stinging remark: “It goes, boys!” In addition to pushing the technical boundaries of climbing, Lynn Hill, in a single ascent, forever defined the place of women on American granite walls. Nearly thirty years later, French climber Soline Kentzel follows in her footsteps, arriving in the heart of a national park carpeted with giant sequoia forests. Among the hikers who come to admire the gigantic waterfalls and the domes polished by time, she forges her own path to reach the immensity of the big walls. This first trip is one of exploration: traversing the cliffs, taking in the scale of the place, and searching for a project that will transform her. The following year, she returns to the park with a major ambition: to attempt The Nose for a solo ascent. Several days suspended in mid-air, pitch after pitch, sleeping in a tent clinging to the rock face, on this route that many, since Lynn Hill, consider one of the most demanding on the planet. An opportunity for Soline to discover her limits, and perhaps, to find herself. This episode was directed by Thomas Firh, with Inès Cochard. The narration was presented by Clémence Hacquart.
