L’envol des oies sauvages, avec Christian et Paola Moullec #102
🎧 Take to the skies with migratory birds in an ultralight aircraft with Christian and Paola Moullec. This story can be found in episode 102 of "Les Baladeurs" (The Wanderers), "The Flight of the Wild Geese." Every year, as the nights begin to encroach upon the daylight hours and the air begins to hold the first hints of cold weather, millions of birds take flight and begin their great journey. From the boreal forests of the North, they cross all of Europe to the sun-drenched lands, tracing a perfectly orchestrated ballet in the sky. But for several decades now, these routes have been crumbling, birds have fallen victim to guns, and some lineages have become extinct. Among them are the lesser white-fronted geese, so small, so discreet, that the world hasn't even heard them disappear. For Christian Moullec, who grew up with his eyes turned towards the sky, every species that vanishes is a tragedy. A meteorologist and ornithologist by passion, he has crisscrossed the globe, venturing into its wildest corners to observe, study, and defend birds. It was during these travels that he met Paola, who shared his fascination with life and his desire to preserve its fragile beauty. Since then, their paths have remained intertwined. Together, in the early 1990s, they grasped the extent of the disaster afflicting the lesser white-fronted geese and decided to make it their cause. Their strategy: to join the world of birds, to become one of them, to fly at their level in an ultralight aircraft, slicing through the clouds to forge a new path in the sky, far from hunting grounds, hoping that the geese would follow them. A seemingly impossible project, utopian for some. But Christian and Paola persist, driven by a shared conviction: some ideas must be pursued even when they seem impossible, because the life of an entire species hangs in the balance, up there, beneath their wings.
