#bellaprof #gospel #john What purpose does the figure of John the Baptist serve? What is his role in the Gospel narrative, and especially in the Gospel of John? Baptism is a gesture we almost take for granted. In reality, that strange prophet preaching "in the wilderness" is doing something unheard of and totally original for his time. Bodily washing or immersion in water were gestures performed as part of the religious practices of the Temple, but they were not a sign of change, personal transformation, or, as they say in jargon, "penance." What's even more surprising is that John's message, while challenging, is very popular, and people flock to him. This gives rise to concern among the authorities, who subject John to a full-scale interrogation by a panel of experts, whom we can literally call inquisitors.
