Iron Lifeline: The Remote Town of Schefferville and its Incredible Railway
It's June 3rd, 2025, and I'm starting my day in Schefferville, Quebec, far into the subarctic northlands of Canada. Located so far north that there's snow and ice on the ground and bordering Labrador, Schefferville has a fascinating (and somewhat sad) history. Built in 1954 to support the Iron Ore Company of Canada's mining operations, the town has evolved to become an Innu settlement, slowly coming back after near abandonment. After a walk through the streets of Schefferville, we arrive at Tshiuetin Rail Transportation's station, where we watch the crew of the twice-weekly "Expresse" wye the train in some rare ground-level footage of rail movement in Schefferville. At 9 o'clock, we're off on the 357-mile journey south through Labrador to Sept-Iles, through some of eastern Canada's greatest and most stunning scenery and remote wilderness. We pass a parade of Quebec, North Shore & Labrador trains along the way once arriving at the Wacouna Subdivision at Emeril Junction, Newfoundland and Labrador. Thanks for watching!
