It's difficult to find someone who doesn't have at least one of these vision disorders. And for good reason: all three are extremely common, with each having more than 2 million cases per year in Brazil. Their causes are not fully understood, but it is known that in most cases, there is an association with genetics. Those with myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism should see an ophthalmologist at least once a year to check for possible changes in their prescription. Myopia is a visual disorder characterized by a "longer" eyeball, which causes the image to form before the light reaches the retina. Hyperopia (farsightedness) is the opposite of myopia (nearsightedness); the eye is "shorter," causing the image to form behind the retina. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has an irregular, oval curvature, causing light to be refracted, concentrating at various points and forming the image in multiple regions. The problem can also occur due to deformations in the lens, but these cases are less frequent. Those with myopia have difficulty seeing distant objects, which appear blurry. For those with hyperopia, seeing nearby objects is more difficult. In astigmatism, because there are multiple focal points for image formation, both near and far objects are distorted and appear "blurred." Without treatment, in addition to vision changes, these disorders can cause headaches due to the effort required to make images clear. Generally, myopia develops and progresses throughout adolescence and stabilizes around 18 to 21 years of age. But each case varies greatly, and the degree of myopia can increase even beyond the age of 30. It is important to emphasize that stabilization does not guarantee that the disorder will never recur. The diagnosis of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism is based on the patient's complaint and a series of ophthalmological exams that can be performed in the office, such as visual acuity tests (which include visualizing sequences of letters that gradually decrease in size), intraocular pressure, refraction, and fundus examination.
