The Ateneo Mercantil de la CV Foundation is organizing a new lecture as part of the II Cycle of Emblematic Buildings of Valencia, this time focusing on the dome of Valencia Cathedral. This is another opportunity to delve into Valencian history and heritage, presented by Salvador Vila Ferrer, the Cathedral's conservation architect. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sorolla Room of the Ateneo, and will be moderated by Vicente de Castro. Admission is free until capacity is reached. About the Dome of Valencia Cathedral The dome is an architectural element that crowns the crossing of a church and its main function is to illuminate and ventilate the interior of the temple. It is built as an octagonal tower on pendentives or squinches, allowing for a structural transition between the church's floor plan and the upper dome, providing natural light to the central nave. In Valencia Cathedral, a Gothic structure built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the dome rises above the crossing with an octagonal prism of two superimposed sections, featuring large windows with openwork tracery that flood the interior with light. Architecturally, it represents a masterpiece of Valencian Gothic architecture, with a structure that combines visual lightness and structural solidity, avoiding pronounced buttresses thanks to the design of its walls and openings. This element is not only key from a structural point of view, but also historically and artistically, as it is an essential part of the character of Valencia's most important Gothic church.
