After the Battle of the Kalka River in 1223, when the Russians were crushed by the Mongols, 14 years would pass, during which it seemed that the Mongol danger had disappeared. It was just a pause, which the Russian princes did not take advantage of. The Mongols would return in 1337, under the leadership of Batu Khan, in massive numbers, equipped with siege engines, determined to conquer any force that stood in their way. They crushed and defeated the Cumans, then the Volga Bulgarians.
