In 1812, through the Bucharest Peace Treaty, signed in the Manuc Inn, between the Ottoman Turks and Tsarist Russia, the Principality of Moldavia lost the territory between the Prut and the Dniester, called Bessarabia. Approximately 500,000 inhabitants will become subjects of the Russian Empire. Five strategic fortresses came under Russian rule: Hotin, Tighina, Cetatea Alba, Chilia and Ismail along with 17 towns and about 3000 villages. We lost approximately 45,630 km² To change the demographic balance and dilute the Romanian majority, over time, the Russian Empire brought in foreign colonists (Bulgarians, Gagauzians, Germans, Russians and Ukrainians), offering them land and tax exemptions. Although it promised an efficient administration and civilization, gradually, the Russian occupation would do what it knew how to do best in history: oppress the population and attempt forced Russification.
