Low back pain is very common during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. It is usually caused by a combination of hormonal changes, weight gain, changes in posture, and the stretching and weakening of abdominal muscles. Common features include: A dull ache or stiffness in the lower back. Pain that worsens after standing, walking, or sitting for long periods. Sometimes pain extends into the buttocks or back of the thighs. You can often manage mild pregnancy-related low back pain by: Maintaining good posture. Using a pillow to support your back when sitting. Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees. Wearing supportive, low-heeled shoes. Applying a warm (not hot) compress to the painful area. Doing gentle exercises such as walking, pelvic tilts, or prenatal stretching, if your healthcare provider says they are appropriate. Avoiding lifting heavy objects and asking for help when needed.
