The Longest Day

"THE LONGEST DAY" By: Keith Michael Rau Verse One Pulled into a truck stop off of Interstate 80 Had to scale my load, but ended up doing a 180 The phone lit up and the pause was long And I could tell by the voice something was wrong She said, "Keith, your boy's been in a wreck, somewhere down in Tennessee..." I said, "Do they know where he's at?" She said, "That's all we know right now." And hearing that just stopped me cold A million thoughts started running through my head And all I could think to do was begin to pray instead Chorus I'd driven through blizzards, mountains, floods, and rain But nothing ever scared me like hearing my boy's name A thousand miles away and helpless as could be Lord, watch over my boy in Tennessee I didn't have the answers I didn't know what to say I just kept talking to Jesus Through the longest day Verse Two I called my wife and she started to cry Before I knew it, she was on her way. And then we both, just began to pray I called every badge I could find that day, Looking for answers, somewhere along the way Nobody knew where my boy was at And every dead end knocked me flat Every call another question Every answer came too late When you don't know if your boy's alive Every minute feels like fate Chorus I'd driven through blizzards, mountains, floods, and rain But nothing ever scared me like hearing my boy's name A thousand miles away and helpless as could be Lord, watch over my boy in Tennessee I didn't have the answers I didn't know what to say I just kept talking to Jesus Through the longest day Bridge Then somebody finally gave us the news The rumors we'd heard hadn't been the truth No helicopter ride, just an ambulance instead And thank God our boy was alive and not dead Then I finally got to hear his voice On the other end of the line I don't remember much of what was said Just thanking God he was alive Final Chorus I'd driven through blizzards, mountains, floods, and rain But nothing ever scared me like hearing my boy's name Then I heard that voice And the fear rolled away The Lord was watching over him Every mile of the way And I'll thank Him for the rest of my life For getting us through that day Outro Later when I saw that truck I just bowed my head and prayed 'Cause that tough young man climbed out on his own And lived to see another day.... ©2026 Keith Michael Rau All Rights Reserved.
