If Only The Outlaws Were Still Here
There are artists we enjoy, and then there are artists who become part of the soundtrack of our lives. For me, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Johnny Cash weren't just country singers. They were storytellers, truth tellers, and musical heroes. Their songs spoke about real life—heartbreak, redemption, faith, mistakes, hard work, and the struggles that make us who we are. They never needed flashy production, manufactured image, or smoke and mirrors. They stood behind their music and let their songs do the talking. In a world that often seems to be moving further away from authenticity, their music remains a reminder of what country music once was and what it can still be at its very best. This song is my humble tribute to four men whose voices helped shape not only country music, but generations of listeners who found pieces of their own lives in those songs. Country music lost something irreplaceable when these legends left us. Their influence remains, their songs endure, and their legacy will never be forgotten. I often find myself wondering what country music would sound like today if they were all still around. This song is my attempt to answer that question. "If Only The Outlaws Were Still Here" By: Keith Michael Rau Intro Stopped at a truck stop somewhere in Tennessee Put a dollar in the jukebox and let the records speak Verse One Waylon filled the room with a rebel's kind of grace And for a few short minutes, time slowed its pace Then Merle sang of working men trying to survive The kind of songs that helped a broken soul get by George came through the speakers, smooth and crystal clear And I caught myself wishing they were still here Chorus If only the outlaws were still here Country music might still sound like blood, sweat, and tears Songs about hard times, faith, and second chances too The kind that felt like they were written just for me and you No smoke and mirrors, no manufactured cheers Just real-life stories told by true pioneers I'd give anything to go back to those good old years If only the outlaws were still here Verse Two Johnny sang of sinners, redemption, and regret Of roads a man can travel but never quite forget Those voices weren't just records spinning on a shelf They felt like old companions when I needed help They knew about the heartache and the price that came with pride About losing what you love and somehow surviving the ride They never claimed perfection, they just told it like it is That's why their songs still hit me right between the ribs Chorus If only the outlaws were still here Country music might still sound like blood, sweat, and tears Songs about hard times, faith, and second chances too The kind that felt like they were written just for me and you No smoke and mirrors, no manufactured cheers Just real-life stories told by true pioneers I'd give anything to go back to those good old years If only the outlaws were still here Bridge Maybe heaven needed a house band Waylon on guitar with Johnny fronting the stand Merle trading stories while George sings harmony Lord knows that's a show I'd sure pay to see Final Chorus If only the outlaws were still here The world could use a little more of what they shared A little more truth and a little less disguise A little more soul and a little less compromise But they left us their music, and it's waiting right here In every steel guitar and every cold Lone Star beer So I'll raise one tonight to the men we hold dear And thank God for the outlaws who were here Outro The jukebox finally went silent But their voices never did. ©2026 Keith Michael Rau All Rights Reserved.
