On the night of August 17th, 1959, hundreds of lives were forever altered after an 80 million ton landslide devastated the area of SW Montana near Hebgen Lake. The earth let loose a magnitude 7.5 earthquake which resulted in the greatest natural disaster to ever hit the Rocky Mountains, forever changing the landscape of the area. The subsequent damming of the Madison River created a lake now known as "earthquake lake".
