Sulle tracce di Enea lungo le coste del Salento

#gediwatch #Aeneid #landing Aeneas was here. Archaeologists who have been working for years in Castro, in the province of Lecce, are now certain of it. The hero celebrated by Virgil in the Aeneid, fleeing Troy, arrived on the Italian coast, then reached Lazio and founded Lavinium. And his landing would be precisely in Salento, thanks to many literary parallels between the poet's descriptions and the structure of Castro, but above all, the discovery of a temple where a Trojan Athena was worshipped, the remains of whose monumental statue are preserved in the city museum. Thanks to these parallels, Castro has been recognized by the Council of Europe as part of the Aeneas Cultural Itinerary, along with Turkey, Greece, Albania, and Tunisia.
