In the Aeneid, Virgil recounts Aeneas's great voyage from Troy to Latium. Along our journey along the Sea Peoples' route, we stop at the town in Puglia that was also the first port of call on Aeneas's route: Castro Marina. That Castro was a unique vantage point for sea observation is confirmed by the discovery of an ancient Temple of Minerva here. Little remains of the Temple, a metope, but it's enough to understand why Virgil identified this place not so much as a possible landing place for Aeneas (a character whose existence we don't know), but more generally as a passageway for the Sea Peoples who, sailing the Mediterranean toward Latium, later led to the founding of Rome.
