Already in prehistoric times the coastal caves have known the human presence. The Latin voice since the 3rd century appears - as ancient Latinism - also in Greek, that is Κάστρον (Kàstron). The birth of a first urban center occurred at the time of the Liburnian-Illyrian and Pelasgian migrations (17th-16th century BC) when from nearby Epirus populations from the Balkan peninsula moved westwards. It was inhabited by the Messapi (with the name of ΛΙΚ? On the Map of Soleto) and by the Greeks.
