2 Grounders, 2 Doubtful Captains, 0 Boats Left Behind | Grounding 21ft Yamaha & 28ft Tidewater

This afternoon I got a call for a boat aground up by Jewfish Key. As I was approaching the grounded boat, I got a text from my boss that I had another grounding coming in up by the north end of Anna Maria Island, but we’ll get to that later. Anyways, I was able to get pretty close to the first boat and was able to hand the towline to the captain who was standing by the bow of his boat. I’m still not quite sure how they ended up where they did even after asking the captain, but regardless, I was there to help. Neither the captain nor his wife were confidant I would be able to pull the boat free, but I was confident that if I had enough water in the channel, I would be able to pull them free, and sure enough, it came free even easier than I expected. After towing them out of the narrow channel and to deeper water, I untied and headed up to the second job. This boat was a much bigger and heavier boat, but it too was sitting on a seagrass bed and I was able to get pretty close to this one as well, so I had no doubts that I would be able to pull them free; I just didn’t know how hard I’d have to pull! I warned the people on the boat that it would probably be a little violent and made sure they were all sitting down and holding on. While it was a bit more violent than most of the grounding I do, it wasn’t too bad, and they expected it to be much worse! 😂 After a nice $50 tip and a bunch of towline pull in, I headed back to my dock for the night. Just get there when you get there — after this one's handled. First things first — the boat in front of me. The captain actually walked me through how he ended up where he did, step by step, and I still couldn't quite wrap my head around it. Some routes to a sandbar just don't make sense no matter how many times they're explained to you. Neither the captain nor his wife had much faith I was going to get them off it, and honestly I don't blame them — from where they were standing on the bow, it looked like a lost cause. I saw enough water in the channel to like my odds a lot better than they did. Line to the bow, engine up, steady pull, and that hull came off the bottom faster and easier than I expected, let alone them. Towed them out through the narrow channel to deeper water, untied, and pointed the boat north for job two. This one was a different animal entirely — a much bigger, heavier boat, buried into a seagrass bed like it had settled in for the season. I could get in nice and close, so freeing it was never really in doubt. How hard I'd have to pull, though, was another question entirely, and not one I could answer until the line came tight. I gave everyone onboard the safety brief before I even took up slack: sit down, hold on, this might get a little violent. It got a little violent. Not "hang on for dear life" violent, but enough of a jolt that everyone onboard was relieved it wasn't as bad as they'd braced for.
