Snow Patrol ~ Day 13: Steady Ahead! GreatLakes Bald Eagle Cam & North Sky Raptor Sanctuary update June 15th 2026 "Snow's condition has remained steady through the weekend, with today's follow up radiographs providing indicators that his current treatment plan continues to be effective!! Both wings are now bandage free, & observations will focus on Snow's ability to display natural movements, posture & overall muscle development. Concurrently, the medical team has noted Snow re-exhibiting the behaviors & temperament typical for a raptor of his maturity, a supporting indicator that significant discomfort is no longer present & he is being described as more "lively & alert". "Snow's treatment will continue with the planned physical therapy, medication for inflammation & breathing treatments (as well as anti-fungal medication) to assist with aspergillosis. Last weeks blood test results indicate unremarkable findings (all within normal range), though we still await results fro lead testing & sexing of the bird. Included in today's photos, is a cautionary tale as to why many rehabilitators take great efforts to source their food from consistent, & even commercial, sources. A patient's immune system is often compromised due to the injury, disease or condition that caused them to require care initially and during this time, it is critical to limit outside variables or stressors on that system as treatment progresses. The provided radiographs highlight a sample of locally caught fish, collected over the past year, donated by well-intentioned residents looking to aid rehabilitation efforts. Each image shows a hook(unknowingly) lodged in the donated food, that if not scanned and removed prior to being eaten by the raptors in care, would have certainly complicated their recovery process. Other hazards exist as well. such as disease, parasites, & environmental contamination(lead mercury poisons) which is why, despite the reality that patient diet accounts for a significant portion of total rehabilitation expenses, you will often find rehabilitation organizations declining offers of free food. Rest assured that the fish you've seen provided to Snow is cleanly sourced, as is all of our patient and ambassador diet!
