This 100-Year-Old Lighter Was Doomed… But I Restored It!
Hello, everyone! In this video, I restore an antique FLOATING BREVETE S.G.D.G lighter. These lighters were produced in the 1920s-1930s in French factories of well-known brands like Lancel. I’m holding a real century-old find! Breveté SGDG was a French patent type that ceased to exist in 1968. I managed to find only a few examples of this lighter online: one on eBay, sold for 95 euros, and not in the best condition, and another on a collector’s forum. One of them was covered in black leather, which I really liked, and I wanted to do the same. I bought this lighter over a year ago at an auction for just 5 dollars. When I opened the package, it had a strong smell of old rags and kerosene. After quickly examining the working principle, I put the lighter in a coffee can, sealed it, and put it on a shelf, forgetting about it for a while. But when I needed that can, I was pleasantly surprised to find it again! After starting the restoration, the smell disappeared, but the task was still to restore the lighter to its former beauty. Restoration process: 1. Removing the old cotton and wick 2. Disassembly 3. Treating rust with a rust converter 4. Washing 5. Nickel removal using electrolysis in a 10% caustic soda solution 6. Sanding 7. Soldering dents with silver solder (40% silver) 8. Soldering parts with soldering paste 9. Restoring the screwdriver 10. Sanding and polishing small parts 11. Copper plating 12. Glossy nickel plating 13. Cleaning and replacing rusty iron parts 14. Reassembly 15. Leather covering 16. Refilling 17. Final touches If you liked the restoration result, please rate it in the comments (from 1 to 10)! I’m really interested to know where you’re watching from, so feel free to share your location!
