Matera, a city in southern Italy, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It is famous for its unique stone dwellings, the "sassi," carved directly into the limestone cliffs. Matera's history begins in the Paleolithic era. Even then, the first cave dwellings were dug into the soft limestone.
