Bari is a port city and the capital of the Apulia region in southern Italy. If Italy were a boot, Bari would be located at the heel, just above the heel, and just below the spur. Located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, Bari is famous for its ancient historic center (Bari Vecchio) and the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Bari also boasts medieval castles, walls, an old fort, and the narrow streets of the Old Town. The first settlements in Bari appeared in the early Bronze Age. The first mention of Bari dates back to 347 AD, when Gervasius, the city's bishop, attended the Council of Sardinia. It has passed through Arab, Byzantine, and Spanish rule and was the starting point for the Crusades. In 1098, the Pope convened a congress in the city to discuss relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches after the Great Schism.
