Improving Value in Medicine: Health Technology Assessment and Determining the Value of Treatments

Although the US healthcare system excels in innovation and technology, the costs are astronomically high. Organizations like ICER, The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, aim to address the challenge of high prices in the US health system by pushing for fair pricing and access and ensuring sustainable high-value healthcare for all Americans. At our next grand rounds, Grace Lin and Jeffrey Tice, two UCSF faculty members who also lead work in ICER, will demystify the contributors to drug pricing and explore how health systems can improve value in modern medicine. Speakers Grace A. Lin, MD is professor of Medicine in the DGIM at UCSF Health, where she sees primary care patients. She is also medical director for Health Technology Assessment for ICER. Grace’s research has focused on the appropriateness of medical care provided to patients, shared decision making, and assessing the quality of decision making by doctors and patients. Jeffrey Tice, MD is professor of Medicine in the DGIM at UCSF Health. His non-clinical work focuses on developing and evaluating risk assessment tools for breast cancer to efficiently use screening technologies and preventive therapies to decrease the burden of breast cancer. He also performs technology assessments and support cost-effectiveness modeling and budget impact analyses for new medications, medical devices, and health system interventions for ICER. Note: Closed captions will be available within 48-72 hours after posting.
