On a child's first birthday, there are special foods and rituals that are enjoyed in Korea. The first birthday party is called "dol-janchi," and it is always filled with rice cakes, or tteok. Even in the past, when rice was scarce, Koreans of all classes would set aside rice to make rice cakes for a child’s first birthday. These rice cakes symbolized parents' sincere wishes for a child’s health and happiness. In this episode of "Hansik of the Day," we look at the history of tteok, the different kinds that have developed in various regions as well as rice cakes that have been passed down through generations in noble families. 돌 잔칫날, 떡 아이가 태어난 지 일 년째 되는 날, 한국에서는 아이를 위해 꼭 준비하는 음식과 행사가 있다. 이날을 '돌잔치'라고 부르며, 반드시 '떡'을 준비한다. 쌀과 먹을 것이 귀했던 시절, 왕실에서부터 백성까지 형편을 막론하고 아이의 첫 생일 만큼은 반드시 아이를 위해 꼭 준비했다는 떡, 그 속에는 아이의 건강과 행복을 간절히 바라는 부모의 마음과 사랑이 가득 담겨있다. 지역마다 다양한 향토적 특징을 담고 있는 가지각색의 떡부터, 양반가 집안 대대로 내려오던 방식을 고수하고 있는 이야기가 담긴 떡까지 떡에 담겨있는 의미와 숨은 이야기를 찾아 떠나본다.
