Market day: Gukbap A small street in a country village bustles with people from early morning. People set up their stalls with produce they've brought from their farms. Today is market day. Unlike most traditional marketplaces, the five-day market opens just once every five days. Since long ago, the five-day market was where people would go to buy household goods and food, and exchange news and information. One of the most important parts of a marketplace is the food, and at the five-day market the fan favorite is gukbap. Serving rice and soup together in one bowl, gukbap is a warm and hearty treat. How, and why, did gukbap come about? Each region has its own type of gukbap and a story that follows.
