Why This Tiny Fleece is an Art Yarn Dream
Meet Salome, a 4-year-old ewe with a moorit fleece that is truly one-of-a-kind. While she is a spotted ewe, her fleece itself doesn’t carry spots—but I’ll show you on her neck wool exactly how that spotting is expressed, resulting in a beautiful mix of white, brown, and fawn where the colors meet. Despite my well-known "feelings" about spotted fleeces, Salome’s wool is something special. At 21.9 spinning fineness, it is incredibly soft despite its very short staple length and tightly coiled locks. In this video, we’ll skirt her fleece and discuss why these unique characteristics make it the perfect candidate for spinning textured art yarns directly from the locks. I'm skirting fleeces in preparation for my 2026 fleece auction and I am making videos of each fleece skirting session.
