Lessons from a Murder--June 2026 Gospel Meeting

What can we learn from the first murder? Jarrod Jacobs, speaking at our June 2026 gospel meeting at the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette, asks that question. The story is found in Genesis 4 and it concerns two brothers--Cain and Abel. Cain was angry with his brother because his sacrifice was not accepted by God but his brother’s sacrifice was accepted. This is the same conflict we have today: we can choose to obey God or not to obey. The lessons learned from that murder (conflict) are simple: God has rules that don’t change based on our attitude; If we obey God, He will accept us/ otherwise He will reject us; Our attitudes and reactions will not change God’s will; and Our sins have consequences, even if we are forgiven.
