Freedom: It Cannot Work Without Morality (06.14.2026 AM)

Freedom will not work without morality (self-discipline). Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN uses 2 Peter 2:18-22 to introduce that subject and to show that the lack of morality will cause us to be slaves of corruption and brought into bondage. Lanny talks about four freedoms (the last three are specific to the USA and other like-minded countries). First, there is our FREEDOM IN CHRIST (Galatians 5:13-15, John 8:31-35). That freedom does not give us permission to sin. Then, there is ECONOMIC FREEDOM (James 4: 13-15, James 5:1-6, Colossians 3:22-25). That freedom does not gives us permission to be corrupt and greedy. Next, there is POLITICAL FREEDOM (1 Peter 2:13-16, Romans 13:1-7, Titus 3:1). That freedom does not give rulers permission to act immorally or corruptly. Study the examples of King David in the Old Testament or even presidents in this country. Personal immorality can affect the course of a nation. And finally, there is PERSONAL FREEDOM. "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" is a foundational phrase from the United States Declaration of Independence (Matthew 7:12, 1 Corinthians 6:12, 1 Corinthians 10:23). That freedom does not give me permission to enslave myself or harm others.
