At just 13 years old, Ahmed Altawil, a Palestinian young man from Gaza, stepped into the pitch-black Mediterranean, chasing a life the world had denied him. This is the painful reality of a journey that began in the ruins of the Syrian Yarmouk camp and nearly ended at the bottom of the ocean. After losing his mother at age three and being "buried alive" by statelessness in Egypt, a spark of hope from Mohammed Assaf’s Arab idol victory led Ahmed’s family to Gaza, searching for a homeland. As borders closed, they were forced back to the shore, paying smugglers for a seat on a vessel built for 30 people but that carried 300. Ahmed reveals the chilling moment the engine died in open water and the miracle that followed his father’s desperate prayer.
