Dalla transumanza alla multifunzionalità: la storia della tenuta Marella e delle sue capre murciane

In the earliest history of Roman agriculture, transhumant herding began to take place in that area during the winter as well, giving rise to a great pastoral tradition in Rome. Numerous historical accounts confirm this phenomenon. In a reportage, we recounted the Marella family's decision to raise goats, with the aim of contributing, through their milk, to the strong local cheesemaking tradition, known for the production of goat and sheep cheeses within a particularly interesting supply chain. The founder, Paolo Marella, a transhumant herder, founded a company dairy in the 1970s to add value to the milk produced by his flock. Over the following decade, this dairy transformed into what is now known as Formaggi Boccea. The transhumance took place in the mountains near Amatrice for summer pastures and in the winter in Rome for winter pastures. Today, Emanuele Marella, along with his brother and sister, has decided to start a Murciano-Granadina goat farm on the Marella Estate in Santa Maria di Galeria (Rome), located next to an archaeological site of great historical interest. We visited them to learn about their experience and understand the motivations behind the many innovative choices they've made in goat farming. We met with Emanuele Marella, the farm coordinator Alessandro Milano, and their veterinarian Lorenzo Tagliaferri.
