The English Riviera Express with Mayflower | Cheltenham Spa - Kingswear | 2nd May 2026

A rainy and sunny Saturday on the Great Western Mainline and Devon Coast as we travel on the "English Riviera Express" from Cheltenham Spa to Kingswear for Dartmouth. Class 45 Peak diesel locomotive 45118 'The Royal Artilleryman' takes the train to Taunton, where it gets replaced by steam locomotive B1 61306 'Mayflower' from Taunton to Kingswear. Mayflower runs along the coastline Dawlish, Teignmouth and then to Torbay at Paignton where the train joins the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway to Kingswear Station, Mayflower then leaves Kingswear for Churston to face in the right direction for the return journey, we take the ferry boat across the River Dart to Dartmouth. We then take the ferry boat back to Kingswear Station to take Mayflower's train back to Taunton and Cheltenham Spa Station where we say goodbye to the Class 45 diesel locomotive as it takes the train all the way back to Crewe.
